And Popular Music and Society = Best. Subject. Ever. Next week we're looking at the birth of rock 'n' roll. I mean, come on, how cool is that?
And I saw Notes On A Scandal last night. I thought it was very captivating, but disturbingly so. I felt uncomfortable for a large portion of the film, but it was made very well, and all the performances were top-notch. You can see why Jedi and Cate recieved Oscar nods.
SPEAKING of the Oscars...Did I predict the winners? Let's see...
Best Actor
Prediction: Leo.
Winner: Forest Whitaker
I was surprised by this. Pleasantly surprised.
Best Supporting Actor
Prediction: Mark Whalberg
Winner: Alan Arkin
Again, pleasantly surprised. Good to see the Academy recognising some independent films.
Best Actress
Prediction: Helen Mirren
Winner: Helen Mirren
Please. Who DIDN'T predict this.
Best Supporting Actress
Prediction: Addriana Barraza/Rinko Kikuchi
Winner: Jennifer Hudson
I wasn't surprised by this, but I feel either of these two were overlooked.
Animated Feature
Prediction: Cars
Winner: Happy Feet
Continuing the trend of me sucking, I was also happy with this. Go Australia...or something.
Art Direction
Prediction: Pan's Labyrinth
Winner: Pan's Labyrinth
As I said, the Academy likes well-made fairy tales.
Cinematography
Prediction: The Prestige
Winner: Pan's Labyrinth
BOO. Not that Pan's Labyrinth doesn't deserve to win...but bah. But as I said, I was hesitant about making the prediction in the first place.
Costume Design
Prediction: The Queen
Winner: Marie Antoinette
Meh.
Directing:
Prediction: The Departed
Winner: The Departed
Better late than never.
Film Editing:
Prediction: Flight 93
Winner: The Departed
Foreign Language Film
Prediction: Pan's Labyrinth
Winner: The Lives of Others
Pfftt. Robbed.
Makeup:
Prediction: Pan's Labyrinth
Winner: Pan's Labyrinth
Best Picture:
Prediction: The Departed
Winner: The Departed
Sound Editing:
Prediction: Blood Diamond
Winner: Letters From Iwo Jima
I was surprised at this. War movies are usually not graced with a lot of technical awards.
Visual Effects:
Prediction: Pirates of the Caribbean
Winner: Pirates of the Caribbean
Adapted Screenplay:
Prediction: The Departed
Winner: The Departed
Original Screenplay:
Prediction: Pan's Labyrinth
Winner: Little Miss Sunshine
Again, a pleasant surprise.
Well, 7/17. No surprise, I suck at predicting the Oscars.
But oh yeah, that's right, my logic works on who the awards SHOULD go to.
Sorry if I seem to screw up the rhythm.

One day for a prediction.
I have to work tomorrow, and I must say, as much as I love my new job, I am getting sick of seeing the place. Thankfully it's only for 6 hours, and it should go rather quickly as I'm working with good people.
And the Oscars are on tomorrow night. I will be most dissapointed if I happen to view the results before the actual broadcast...I'm actually missing the start. I have band practice until 9.30 and then I'm rushing home to watch the beginning, which I will have set up to be taped. And, of course, I'll post the winners and how they compare to my predictions I made last month.
I'm missing Oscar night by one night, as I'm seeing Notes On A Scandal on Tuesday night. It should be good. One day too late, however, for a prediction.
I also just watched an "Inside the Actor's Studio" episode with Cate Blanchett. Hopefully I haven't spelled her name wrongly. she's a very interesting and captivating actor. And quite funny.
Yes, I know this post is dry and dull, but so is my mood at the moment. Subsequently, off to bed I go.

Five days, music in the evening…
Five days left until my four month hiatus ends. A very long five days. Honestly, I can't wait to rock up, even if I hate my subjects. At least I'll be challenged to achieve some things. Working on essays, researching things…I've probably mentioned what I'm doing, but once again, here are my subjects:
Advanced Print Reporting
Radio Journalism
True Lies: Documentary Studies
Popular Music and Society
I'm particularly looking forward to Radio Journalism and Documentary Studies…as long as don't have to sit through the god-awful Lessons In Darkness or whatever it was called. Worst. Documentary. Ever. I don't care what anyone says, it was BAD.
My band is playing a gig tonight at All Saints Anglican in Greensborough. Let's hope it goes well. J
And with that, good day.

Two weeks and a movie at 8.45.
I start university classes in two weeks. And yes, I know I made this EXACT same post yesterday…or, perhaps, the day before…Do you see my point? When I have no goals and an aimless sense of drifting, all I have is two weeks and a movie at 8.45.
Yeah, Miss Potter. I LIKE Renee Zellweger damn it, and I don't care if her eyes are weird. She's GOOD. Yes, Peter Kemp. Regardless of your opinions of her in Chicago, I still think she was good ;)
Hooray for jokes that can be misinterpreted as insults!
I should have reviewed Babel the other night, but I was too tired. I'll skip the review for now, and just give it 4/5. I have my reasons. Go see it.

Sitting at home…
Okay, that's it. I'm sick and tired of it.
Back in October, sure, it sounded great. Four months of holidays! WOOHOO! Yeah, I'm just over it. I work, I sleep, I sometimes play a computer game. I'd much rather have goals, etc.
BUT HEY, I shan't complain.
I enjoy the West Wing.
And I'm seeing Babel tonight, and hopefully I'll put a review up later.

I Am Writing From a Place Far Away, and Yet So Close…
Yes, that's right, ladies and gentleman. I have done the dirty deed and have installed Office 2007 on my computer. I write this update to you not from the safety of www.blogger.com, but from the Microsoft Word software on my computer.
It is an odd feeling, and I don't know if it's even going to work, BUT WE MUST PERSEVERE with these things.
But wait…what's that? I hear you whispering, "Office 2007…Vista will be next." No, my friends, I assure you: I will not purchase Windows Vista for another 18 months. SUCKS to be the people who bought it now, and wasted their money, for we ALL know there are three things in life that are solid and fixed, just as my father before me hath said:
- Life
- Death
- Version 1 of Microsoft products ALWAYS suck.
And without further hesitation, let us POST my post, and see if this little piece of rambling will find its way onto the ever expanding universe of the internet.

However, my new job is going well. It is indeed February, meaning organisation is in the air. My timetable will be confirmed soon, and then it's back in the swing of studying. I must say, I'm looking forward to it, after 4 months of doing...well, not much of anything, really. Apart from working.
Thing at church have picked up full swing again, with all the ministries back in action. The one I see over, the Cafe ministry, is doing well already. We had 72 people to our last service on Sunday, and that's GOOD for the start of the year. I'd like to break 100 people by July, and I think we can do it ;)
I've just ordered a CD called Trafalgar Streets, by a Sydney band called Revive. Check them out = www.reviveband.com. I saw them as a support act for Third Day, and they were excellent. As were Third Day, by the way.
I also saw Hoobastank at the Hi-Fi Bar last Thursday, and that was a GREAT show. Lots of energy, and they just played really well. The singer threw me a guitar pick at the end, but I dropped it and the bouncer gave it to someone else :( Oh wells.
And that's me for today.
